Each correct answer is +1 mark, each wrong answer is -0.25 marks, and blanks are 0. Four wrong answers cancel one correct answer. Guessing pays whenever you can eliminate even one option; a fully blind guess is only a hair above zero (+0.06 in theory), and skipping it also costs nothing.

The rule is the same across all 200 questions, including the Mental Agility Test. There are only three possible outcomes per question:

The deduction of 0.25 per wrong answer is a small tax, not a catastrophe — but it adds up when you guess a lot. Skip 20 questions blindly and miss them all and you lose 5 marks; answer them confidently and you gain 20. Over a full paper, the difference between disciplined guessing and scattered guessing is real. The Math: Is Guessing Worth It?
Every MECEE-BL question has four options. Whether a guess is worth taking is pure probability, and the numbers are not what most students assume. Worked out per question:

Two takeaways. First: the moment you can rule out even one option, guessing is in your favour — the more options you eliminate, the better the bet. Second: a completely blind guess is worth about +0.06, a hair above zero — statistically slightly positive, not the "guaranteed loss" students assume. But because deceptive distractors and exam-day pressure turn blind picks into wrong ones, treating a blind guess as no real advantage is still the sensible reading. Either way, a blind guess is never a disaster, but it is also not a strategy — which is why the exam pattern rules say blanks cost nothing.
When Guessing Beats Skipping
Turn the math above into a one-line decision rule:
- Guess when you can eliminate at least one option, when the topic is familiar but the answer is slipping, or when you are down to two plausible options. These bets are all in your favour.
- Skip when all four options look equally foreign, when a question is a multi-step calculation you cannot even start, or when you are running low on time and still need to bubble cleanly.
- Never skip a question you actually know. Sounds obvious, but under time pressure students overthink correct answers into blanks — that is the most expensive mistake on the whole paper.

What Negative Marking Can Cost You
Put real numbers on it. Say you reach the end of the paper with 20 questions you genuinely do not know. Here is how the three strategies compare:

Notice what the table does not show: a blind guess is not a punishment. The risk is clustered wrong guesses — guess badly 40 times and you have lost 10 marks, roughly a fifth of the distance to a merit-list rank. To lose 1 mark you need 4 wrong answers; to lose 10 you need 40. MEC sets the qualifying cutoff (the 50th percentile) fresh every year based on how candidates perform, so the number moves — but in any cycle a handful of marks decides who makes the merit list, so every disciplined guess compounds.
Strategy for the Exam Hall
Work the paper in three rounds so the marking rule is doing work for you instead of against you:
- Round 1 — bank what you know. Answer every question you are confident about, bubble it immediately, and move on. Get the easy 120–150 marks locked in before anything else.
- Round 2 — eliminate, then guess. Go back to the questions you half-knew, rule out obviously wrong options, and commit. This is where educated guessing earns its +0.17 to +0.38 per question.
- Round 3 — handle the leftovers. For the handful that are truly unknown, pick a strategy and stop agonising: either leave them blank (costs nothing) or bubble one option consistently. Do not spend the final 15 minutes staring at question 178.
- Budget bubbling time. A correct answer left unbubbled counts as blank — 0 marks, not a 0.25 deduction — but you still lose the +1 you knew. The cheapest mistake on the paper is letting a known answer vanish into the OMR sheet, so leave the last few minutes for the bubble check, not for new questions.
