MEC Medical Entrance · Naming Explained

MECEE-UG vs MECEE-BL: What's Actually Changed (and Why the Label Changed)

MECEE-UG and MECEE-BL are the same exam. MECEE-UG was the earlier official label for the same common entrance; recent cycles are branded MECEE-BL (Bachelor Level). The entrance is the Medical Education Common Entrance Examination run by the Medical Education Commission (MEC) for MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing, BSc MLT, BPH and other undergraduate health-science programmes in Nepal. If you have seen both abbreviations on notices and wondered whether one is a different exam — it is not: one exam, two labels across cycles, and this post explains the change and what stayed the same.

Quick answer

MECEE-BL (Medical Education Common Entrance Examination — Bachelor Level) is the current official label for the exam earlier branded MECEE-UG. It is the Medical Education Commission's single entrance for MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing, BSc MLT, BPH and other health-science programmes. The exam structure did not change with the label — still 200 MCQs, 200 marks, 3 hours.

They Are the Same Exam

There is no separate “MECEE-UG” and “MECEE-BL.” The official notice for the current cycle is titled MECEE-BL 2027, and it is the exact same entrance that earlier cycles listed as MECEE-UG. What you register for on entrance.mec.gov.np is one exam covering MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing / BSc Midwifery, BASLP, BAMS, BNS, BSc MLT, BSc MIT, B Pharm, B Optometry, BPT and BPH.

Why Two Labels Exist

The MEC was set up to run one common entrance for all undergraduate health-science programmes across Nepal, replacing a patchwork of separate university-wise entrances. The full official title is long — Medical Education Common Entrance Examination for Bachelor Level — so the Commission's own cycle labels have been trimmed two different ways over the years:

  • “MECEE-UG” was the earlier official label. Older notices and the MECEE-UG subject weightage guide use it — the “UG” standing for Undergraduate.
  • “MECEE-BL” is the current official label. The current notice, the portal and the admit card all use MECEE-BL. “BL” distinguishes the bachelor-level entrance from MEC's other levels (for example the postgraduate level, MECEE-PG).

Both labels describe the same thing: the bachelor-level health-science entrance conducted by the Medical Education Commission.

What “BL” and “2027” Mean

Two parts of the official name cause the most confusion:

  • “BL” = Bachelor Level. It tells you this entrance is for undergraduate (bachelor's) health-science programmes, not the postgraduate exam.
  • The year label (2027) is the academic session, not the exam year in the Nepali calendar. MEC labels each cycle by the session it admits students into. MECEE-BL 2027 is the cycle held in 2083 BS for admission into the 2027 academic session — the same way the previous cycle, held in Kartik 2082 (November 2025), was labelled MECEE-BL 2026.

So “MECEE-BL 2027” is one label for the current cycle — the exam year in the Nepali calendar is 2083, and in the AD/admission-session calendar it is the 2027 session.

What Actually Changed

Strip away the naming noise and very little has moved:

AspectStatus
Exam structureUnchanged — 200 MCQs, 200 marks, 3 hours, OMR
MarkingUnchanged — +1 per correct answer, -0.25 per wrong answer
Conducting bodyMedical Education Commission (as it has been)
Application portalUnchanged — entrance.mec.gov.np
Cycle labelNow uses the session year: MECEE-BL 2027
SyllabusRevised by MEC on April 28, 2026 (15 Baisakh 2083) — this is the real change to track

The change that matters for your preparation is not the label — it is the revised 2083 syllabus, which MEC last updated on 15 Baisakh 2083 (April 28, 2026). Make sure your study plan and practice sets follow that version.

Which Name to Use

Use the current official label wherever it matters:

  • On the official portal and your admit card: use MECEE-BL. Your application is stored under that label.
  • When searching for notices and news: search “MECEE-BL 2027” or “MECEE-BL 2083” — both return the same official notices.
  • In exam guides and on this site: SafalTopper uses MECEE-BL throughout, and mentions MECEE-UG only as the earlier label in the naming history.
Same exam, same preparationSince the label change did not touch the format, the preparation path is unchanged: learn the exam pattern and subject weightage, master the -0.25 negative marking, and practise chapter-wise.
